Queens Finally Has A Top Tier Slice Shop: Austin Street Pizza

Queens is not a borough that is typically associated with a strong pizza scene. But this new corner shop pizzeria in Forest Hills, gives many of Brooklyn and Manhattan’s best slice joints a run for their money.

What’s Unique: Pizzerias serving upscale retro or “neoclassist” slices — like Scarr’s, Upside, Mama’s Too, and L’industrie — are now ubiquitous throughout many areas of the City. Featuring high quality ingredients, these slices typically cost between $4-$5. Austin Street Pizza takes this trend to Queens, along a commercial stretch in Forest Hills.

What To Eat: I tried a number of slices on multiple visits. My favorite is the pesto margherita. It’s equally delicious as a square or standard slice. Their vodka slice is also solid and it includes caramelized onions and bacon. The spot is reminiscent of Mama’s Too — one of my favorite places in NYC. The quality doesn’t quite live up, however it’s a suitable option in an area that lacks notable pizza places.

What To Know Before You Go: Austin Street Pizza is located at 71-63 Austin Street, not too far from Flushing Meadows Park — a nice option if you’re making a day trip out of it. It’s open from 11AM-10PM daily and most pies are available as a slice (pending availability), a personal 14” pie, a square 12×17” pie, or a round 18” pie for sharing.
